Maestro Kirk Muspratt and New Philharmonic are happy to announce the 10th New Philharmonic Young People’s Competition – an educational outreach initiative showcasing the talents of our area young people. Winners of the competition will have the opportunity to perform at a New Philharmonic orchestra concert within eighteen months of audition. We are excited to provide young musicians with this opportunity to showcase their talents and perform on stage at a professional music concert.


To qualify, the young person must . . .

  • Play any instrument or sing – solo, duets, trios, and quartets welcomed.
  • Perform any musical selection (two minute maximum).
  • Reside in COD Community College District 502 or study with a teacher from the district.
  • At the time of audition, be any age up through junior year of high school.
  • Provide accompanist for audition and performance.

Winners will perform their audition piece at a New Philharmonic concert within 18 months following the audition. These assignments are at the discretion of the New Philharmonic Music Director.

FAQ about the New Philharmonic Young Peoples’ Competition:

  • Do I need to bring a copy of the audition piece that I am performing? Yes, the Maestro knows a lot of music, but not everything.
  • Do I need to number the measures on the music? No.
  • Is my audition piece the music that I will be performing if I am selected? Yes.
  • Will I get additional time to perform if I am selected? No, each winner is allowed 2 minutes on stage for their performance.
  • Will I receive written comments or a rating on my audition? No, however, the Maestro will try, time permitting, to verbally comment to the student on the audition.
  • Are other people allowed to sit in on the audition? Yes, if the student consents to them being in the room.
  • May someone record or video the audition? Yes, if the student gives consent.
  • Is there a place to warmup before the audition? Yes, there are private practice rooms available with pianos for the student to warmup onsite.
  • Is there a cash prize for the winners of this competition? No.
