Miss Hokusai is based on the life and works of Japanese artist and ukiyo-e painter Katsushika Hokusai, as seen from the perspective of his talented and fiercely independent daughter, Katsushika O-Ei. Set in 19th century Edo, the animated film is presented in vignettes weaving together moments of Hokusai’s life including sharing the myth and inspiration behind his most famous painting “The Great Wave.” O-Ei is constantly under pressure to inspire her father to be a great artist, while her father is strict and accepts nothing less than perfection in her own works.
